COVID-19 highlighted both successes and room for improvement across immunization information systems in their support of digital health. The VCI coalition heard the call and responded by creating the SMART Health Cards Framework to ensure every individual is empowered with better access to their own health data. Although more than half the United States have adopted SMART Health Cards and more than 200 million people in the country have access to them, this is just the beginning. This work has given people everywhere the ability to cross borders more easily and safely reopen in a crisis. What’s more, it has underscored the importance of making clinical information and credentialing more equitable and useful after the pandemic ends. During this plenary session at AIRA’s National Meeting in April 2022, public health officials discussed the success they’re already experienced with their SMART Health Card implementations and the community response. They also shared their plans for continuing this important work beyond Covid—using these free, open standards to improve interoperability so their residents can be safer, travel more freely, save time, and be more in charge of their health and well-being.
